Introduction
Balochistan Development Projects 2025 | PM Initiatives
In a bold and visionary move, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has announced the redirection of financial relief—gained from the global decline in oil prices—towards transformative infrastructure projects in the historically underserved province of Balochistan. Instead of lowering fuel prices for consumers, the government is investing in critical development initiatives that promise long-term socioeconomic benefits for the region and the country as a whole.
Why Balochistan?
Balochistan, despite being rich in natural resources and strategically significant, has long suffered from underdevelopment, inadequate infrastructure, and limited access to essential services. The federal government’s new strategy aims to reverse this trend by initiating projects that address both immediate and long-term needs, thereby uplifting the province’s standard of living and economic productivity.
N-25 Highway: From Deathtrap to Lifeline
The N-25 highway, often referred to as the “killer highway,” connects Karachi to Chaman via Quetta and has claimed over 2,000 lives in recent years due to its deteriorated condition. Recognizing its strategic importance, the government has announced a comprehensive upgrade of the N-25 into a motorway-standard route.
- Investment: Rs 300 billion
- Supervision: Direct oversight by PM Shehbaz Sharif and CM Sarfaraz Bugti
- Quality Control: Third-party validation of construction standards
This transformation is expected to improve connectivity, enhance trade routes, and reduce traffic accidents significantly.
Kachhi Canal Phase-II: Water for Arid Lands
Water scarcity has long plagued Balochistan’s agricultural sector. To address this, the government is accelerating the completion of the Kachhi Canal Phase-II. This canal system will irrigate arid zones and unlock new opportunities for farming and food security.
- Budget: Rs 70 billion
- Impact: Thousands of acres of barren land to become cultivable
- Benefits: Food security, employment, and rural development
Solarization of Tubewells: Green Energy for Farmers
One of the most forward-thinking projects is the solarization of tubewells used by farmers. This move will not only reduce electricity consumption but also promote sustainable agricultural practices.
- Cost Sharing: 70% funded by the federal government
- Environmental Impact: Reduces carbon footprint and energy bills
- Social Impact: Empowers local farmers and boosts productivity
Motorway Network Expansion: Connecting the Nation
To further integrate Balochistan with the national economy, two major motorway projects are also being launched:
- Hyderabad–Sukkur (M-6) Motorway
- Sukkur–Karachi (M-9) Motorway
These motorways will facilitate smooth transportation, promote inter-provincial trade, and attract local and foreign investment.
Additional Cabinet Decisions
During the same cabinet meeting, other key decisions were also made, including:
- Approval of amendments to the Petroleum Levy Ordinance
- Endorsement of a Sustainable Investment Sukuk Framework
These initiatives aim to bolster the country’s financial infrastructure and attract sustainable investments.
Diplomatic Notes
The Prime Minister also addressed recent international incidents:
- Strongly condemned the killing of eight Pakistani nationals in Iran’s Sistan province
- Extended prayers for the swift recovery of President Asif Ali Zardari, currently battling COVID-19
Conclusion: A Vision for Inclusive Growth
This redirection of financial resources represents a paradigm shift in national planning. Rather than short-term consumer satisfaction, the government has prioritized long-term, inclusive development. If executed effectively, these projects will usher in a new era of prosperity for Balochistan and reinforce the country’s unity and resilience.
